When you are involved in high impact sports such as running, football, soccer, track and field, rugby or field hockey you run a higher risk of getting injured or getting shin splints. If you keep a great diet, this can keep the injuries under control. This will provide your bones with better stability all the way around and you need such stability to play sports.

When you see a shin splints definition you will learn that it is inflammation and pain that is on the inner part of your lower leg (tibia or shin bone) that occurs when the tissue that joins the muscles to the tibia becomes inflamed and irritated. A lot of these injuries are caused by extreme sports where you are using these parts of your body more frequently than others.

If you are performing certain activities, you will have to do more warm up exercises so that you do not get hurt. Shoes are a big help too, depending on what you are doing; they make different ones for all sorts of things just make sure you have the right ones so your injury risks are reduced. If you decide that you want to turn up the intensity of your workout or the length, then you need to warm up more to make sure your body is conditioned properly.

If the muscles in your body start moving against each other you will see that more problems will arise. In your legs you have two major groups of muscles; hamstrings in the lower and quadriceps in the upper leg and you want to make sure that they are working properly to avoid injuries. Some sports areas have hard surfaces that are played on and you need to be extra careful on these; some of these sports include: basketball, running or tennis

A shin splint can happen at any time, so if you think you may have one you can look for certain things: pain located directly in the shin itself, throbbing, swelling to the outside area and redness. There are other symptoms, but these are the most tell tale signs that there is a problem. The causes of these injuries differ from one patient to another, depending on what you do.

Sometimes injuries can come back or move to different areas if you have not allowed a previous injury to heal properly. This could make you favor the uninjured side and cause that to eventually become as damaged as the other side. If you know that there are problems, make sure that you obtain treatment for shin splints. These can be very painful, so make sure that when you walk you keep your gait straight and your foot strikes the equally.
