In African tradition, masks are deemed as intermediaries between two worlds, the worlds of living and the dead in which the spiritual beings of their dead ancestors and other beings rest. That is why masks had been used in early times as requirements for dancers who would offer praise and inspiration at the time of their ceremonies. Up until today several of the citizens of Africa put on masks during ceremonial events.

African masks commonly typifies a theatrical image of non-earthly beings, dead ancestors, and unseen powers of those who are known to be extraordinary. African masks are crafted mainly on a traditional style and these are only worn by many skillful dancers.

Masks are usually worn on special celebrations and initiations such as harvest season, war preparation, as well as worship celebrations. Africans believed that powerful beings would possess those who wear the masks, and represent particular spirits that they have called.

African masks are considered art objects that are generally crafted from wooden, leather, metal and fabric materials. These varieties of masks are most sought these days, not only by antique collectors but by artists as well. Considering that of the fine craftsmanship, no surprise a number of collectors, artists and home decor professionals are fond of them.

A large number of art museums and galleries all over the world display replicas of the said artwork pieces. They are wonderfully hanged on the walls of Western art museums, detached from the costume, and also worn by dancers on their own. Priceless African masks are seen to have their fine creative details revealing the perfect craftsmanship of the artists who have put their whole concentrate and focus in making them.

Today, many varieties of African masks are available anywhere. But masks that are authentic and truly made in Africa are highly valued and priced differently than common designs. It may be difficult to identify the authenticity of the masks, but the unique artistry and aura will tell the difference because the importance of social, religious, and moral values of the whole African community are well expressed in the real ones.
