The core of Buddhist religion, practiced in many countries the world over, comes from the basic teachings of Lord Buddha. Mercy and love for mankind and recognition of the Ultimate truth are essential in Buddhism.
These essentials of Buddhism can be seen in the rites practiced in a Buddhist funeral. When a person in a Buddhist family passes, there are certain mandatory rituals to be followed, in order to make sure that the his or her soul gets promoted to a higher level. To guarantee the deliverance of the deceased from this birth and bidding them the best for his next life, prayers are said to invoke the good energies of the dead.
A traditional bath to the deceased marks the start of the Buddhist funeral rites. Buddhist monks chant different religious text, and these chants are thought to give the soul the correct guidance to achieve spiritual liberation. Then the Lord Buddha's teachings that highlight the significance of kindness and compassion are read out loud by the monks. Meanwhile, the body is prepared for the final rites. Friends and family usually keep some money in the casket of the deceased person. This is to enable the dead person cross the River of Three Hells.
The casket is then put before the altar at home for friends and relatives to pay their respects. Attendees are required to pray for the dead person and the family and friends offer their condolences. Priests who carry out the rites continue to recite the appropriate sutras. The attendees present have to bow at the altar when this recital is completed. As the visitors start leaving, the family members give a gift to each other to show gratitude for partaking in their sorrow.
The family members can decide whether to bury the body or cremate it as per their familial customs, once all these essential rituals are completed. The different ceremonies are a way of bringing peace and acceptance to the family of the deceased as they know their prayers are aimed at elevating the status of the departed in his life after death.
